Fair trade: Awareness, Initiative, Response

This organization began in February of 2004.   Natalie Lehman and Anna Hoekstra co-founded FAIR with their passion for solidarity, learned by mutual experiences living the reality of Salvadorans in Central America . The Salvadorans impressive examples of solidarity inspired FAIR. Seeking justice by promoting Fair Trade and Solidarity is the mission of FAIR.

A new Free Trade Agreement named CAFTA initiated  FAIR's efforts.  FAIR's Anti-CAFTA petition of 700 collected signatures presented to our Congressman Vern Ehlers in April of 2004 led to interviews with local media stations. FAIR has generated two brochures regarding the exploits of Free Trade and the advantages of Fair Trade.    The brochures are featured at local businesses that support fair trade and highlights businesses with fair trade merchandise. A summer newsletter was distributed, emphasizing contacting representatives: FAIR participated in Grand Rapids Labor Day parade and distributed leaflets. FAIR is currently bridging greater solidarity with local retail businesses and consumers to generate commitment toward Fair Trade purchase. FAIR has been featured in several local conferences on topics relating to Latin America , and is a working group of the local West Michigan Peace and Justice Coalition.   FAIR is currently working in conjunction with Media Mouse and local area unions to continue the grassroots movement against CAFTA. Fair is a member of Co-op America's Fair Trade Federation.

We are also working closely with members of our city council and local businesses to promote Grand Rapids as a Fair Trade city. Locally developing our dream of fair and equitable economic practices is our main aim for 2008.
